2. Variants (setting up a product family)

In this section, you will set up all variants necessary if the product has a product family. If the product does not have a product family, i.e. is a single product, you can skip this stage by simply clicking on the Generate Products button to move to the next stage.

Setting up a product family

Product families are created by giving a base product up to 2 configurable attributes (options). For example, the attributes might be size and colour. A combination of four sizes and three colours would give up to 12 possible product variants from base product.

FAQ: Can't see the options you need?

In order to choose a variant, it must be set up in advance to be available to you within ProDigi. This is controlled through the Data Team, in order to ensure that variants are managed in a structured way to drive a better search experience on the website.  When setting up a product, if you cannot see the variant attribute you require, please contact the Data Team. They will checking that it does not conflict or duplicate an existing attribute, and if not, set this up for you. It will then become available immediately.

Note: avoid using a pack size / quantity as a variant or attribute. This will be handled through price breaks later on in the process.

Setup - worked example

In the example below, we are going to set up with just a single variant which is chair colour.

Click add variant attribute then click select to choose the variant attribute (options) that will drive the product variants. In this example, we will choose chair colour.

Configure attribute

You’ll be offered a list of all the possible values which available for the chosen attribute. Select all those which apply to your product. In the example below, the chair is available in blue, green and red, but never black.

When you have chosen all the attributes which apply, click on the apply button. If you want to add a second variant attribute, repeat the process of choosing a variant attribute and the values which apply to your product.

Once you have chosen the attributes which will define your product family, and you are certain you want to proceed, click the generate product variants button.  When this is clicked, ProDigi will set up every combination of product variants for you, given the options and values you have chosen. ProDigi will also also automatically assign product codes to the base product, and each product variant, which will ensure they all work as a product family.

If any combinations of options are not available for your product, you can remove them later.  For example, you may be setting up a clothing product which is available in 4 sizes and 5 colours (20 product variants in total), but is not available in Orange Extra Large. ProDigi will still generate this product variant, but it can be set to inactive later, and will then be disregarded.

Once all variants of your products have been created, and you clicked to generate product variants (or just chosen generate product if the product is not a family), you will be able to move onto the next section of the setup process, 3. Product Details.
